Covering the youth vote

Michael Connery at Future Majority writes a lengthy blog post that dispels some myths about youth voter turnout that is worthwhile for student journalists who might be writing that “how did we vote?” story on election day tomorrow.

The following is a hard nosed look at what we might realistically expect on Tuesday, a list of common mistakes the media makes when reporting on youth, and some tips to help activists, journalists, and bloggers alike accurately assess youth participation on Election Night.

Connery points out, rightly, that journalists can become confused by statistics (turnout numbers vs. share of the electorate, for instance) to the point where they frame the youth vote story incorrectly.

Connery is a progressive Democrat, but his points are taken regardless of political affiliation.
